Shola Shoretire, a young star for Manchester United, will be absent from the Papa John's Trophy final at Wembley because of what has been called a "nonsensical" regulation.
Shoretire, who made his Premier League début for United in 2021 at the age of 17, is presently on loan at League One team Bolton Wanderers.
He replaced West Ham youngster Dafo Apolayan, who joined German club St Pauli, and has appeared in 12 games for the team since joining in January.
Bolton defeated Accrington 2-0 in the Papa John's Trophy semifinal, but the 19-year-old was unfit to play. Teams from League One and League Two, as well as a few U21 teams from higher levels, compete in the event.
The final, which will take place on April 2, will pit Plymouth against The Trotters, who are coached by former Blackpool back Ian Evatt.
However, Shoretire will be unable to participate in the game due to an EFL regulation.
The 19-year-old has participated in three matches so far, including the play-off round loss to Bolton by a score of 4-0. Facundo Pellistri, Alejandro Garnacho, and Kobbie Mainoo are some other well-known players who have competed for United's youth team this season. MEN has allegedly tagged the rule binding Shola Shoretire as 'nonsensical'.
However, the decision to allow U21 teams to compete in the Trophy, which was sharply criticized by fans, was initially justified by the fact that it would provide more chances for young players to develop.

Shoretire's absence from the championship game will be felt by Evatt's team, who won the tournament in 1988/89 for the first time ever.
