The final score did not adequately reflect the extent of Netherlands' dominance in their international encounter against Gibraltar.
The team led by Ronald Koeman had a staggering 51 shots on target and controlled 86% of the play. They were only able to triumph 3-0 despite the lopsided nature of the game.
One of the Dutch players who left the field with remorse was Wout Weghorst, a striker on loan from Manchester United. Weghorst had a frustrating night personally as he tried eight shots at goal but failed to register a goal.
After losing to France 4-0, the Dutch's primary goal was to win and earn three points. However, I must admit that I was a little disappointed in the outcome.
"As far as the fans are concerned, this was the Manchester United player's last international match," SoccerNews reported in response to tweets from Dutch fans.
When defending Weghorst, manager Ronald Koeman blasted the other players for being too predictable, saying via Voetbal International: "Sometimes we gave a cross while Wout faced four defenders."
Voetbal Primeur gave Weghorst a dismal rating of 4.5/10 and questioned why he had trouble scoring goals. Their player ratings read: “It was not Weghorst’s match. Playing as a striker against Gibraltar and not scoring: is that actually possible?
“Erik ten Hag must also have seen that Weghorst even has trouble with the Gibraltar defence.”
FCUpdate‘s five conclusions feature noted: ” Wout Weghorst was at the point of the attack, but he also didn’t look sharp enough.”
Wout Weghorst was described as "disappointing" by Tubantia, and NOS noted that Weghorst was unable to strike "even against Gibraltar."
Since joining the Red Devils during the January transfer window, the Manchester United loanee has only scored twice.
Even though it wouldn't have demonstrated anything, scoring a bunch of goals against Gibraltar would have given him more self-confidence. Instead, he makes his way back to Old Trafford with even more unanswered questions.
