Manchester United's manager Erik Ten Hag has insisted he has no remarks on academy graduate Mason Greenwood's release or criminal charges being dropped.
Greater Manchester Police released Mason Greenwood and cleared him of all criminal records a year after he was accused of assaulting his girlfriend, Harriet Robson.
Since his initial arrest 13 months ago, United had placed England international Ashley Greenwood on paid leave. United will now begin their own internal inquiry into what should happen after the police statement.
On Thursday night, the Red Devils issued a statement in response to the information. The statement read, "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped."
The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. "We will not make any further comment until that process is complete."
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, who noted the withdrawal of crucial witnesses, Mason Greenwood's case got dismissed on the grounds of "no realistic prospect of conviction."
A CPS spokesperson said: "We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review." In this case, a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.
"In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case." We have explained our decision to all parties.
"We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police, and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met."
During his press conference ahead of Crystal Palace's visit to Old Trafford on Saturday, Erik Ten Hag was asked to give an update on Mason Greenwood, but the manager didn't.
"No. Nothing. I can't add anything. I refer to the statement of the club.
He was further asked whether he had contacted Greenwood at all, to which he replied, "As I said, I can't give a comment about the process." I can't say anything about it; I refer to the statement of the club. "At this moment, I can't add anything."
The manager, however, confirmed that Bayern Munich loanee Marcel Sabitzer will be among the Red Devils squad on Saturday afternoon.
A journalist inquired if the 28-year-old Austrian will be available for the Red Devils on Saturday. "Yes," Ten Hag replied.
"He is looking very good." "He [Sabitzer] has only had one session, but you can see he’s a very fit player."
“Coming from Bayern Munich, I didn’t expect anything different in Germany; their players are always good." "He's ready to play," he stated.
Another question came about whether Sabitzer may start, and he replied, “He’s a really smart player, and we gave him some guidance." "He knows what to do; he knows the job, and he could do it (start the game).”
Christian Eriksen's injury, which will keep him out until at least late April after a hard Andy Carroll challenge on Saturday against Reading, prompted Sabitzer's signing.
This further increases the need for the Austrian to get started as Donny van de Beek is also out and Scott McTominay is having fitness issues.
Although Fred has stepped in at various points this season and performed admirably, his skill set is better suited to coming on as a replacement and bringing enthusiasm or to providing a more organized defensive detail when facing a top-tier team.
