'Everyone has a bad game'- Man United's head coach blasts David De Gea's critics

Benni McCarthy, the head coach of Manchester United's first squad, has claimed that losing goalkeeper David de Gea this summer would be a "crime" for the team.

The Spanish player, who transferred to United from Atletico Madrid back in 2011, hasn't signed a new contract as of yet, but it's assumed that he will continue at Old Trafford past this month's deadline. In terms of goalkeeping, United must make a significant choice this summer and may add a new shot-stopper during the transfer window.

De Gea has received a lot of criticism this season, especially in recent weeks, despite earning the Golden Glove in the Premier League this year and recording 17 clean sheets. After Ilkay Gundogan's second goal in the United States' loss in the FA Cup final on Saturday at Wembley, former United captain Roy Keane slammed him.

But despite growing doubts about his compatibility with Ten Hag's preferred style of play for United, McCarthy thinks the team should do all in their power to keep him.

McCarthy, speaking on 947 Joburg, said: "He kept 17 clean sheets in the league. Yes, of course, you're going to concede, but to win the Golden Glove for yet another season is remarkable."

"You see how difficult the league is so I understand that everyone has a bad game here and there, but it doesn't stop him from being one of the best goalkeepers I've seen and I've worked with. He is unbelievable."

"I work with him every single day and I get to see first hand more than what most people get to do. You only see him on a Saturday or on a matchday, and if you see him make a mistake the critics hit the roof.

"But I get to spend every single day with him and he is an unbelievable guy, a great lad, very intelligent and one of the best goalkeepers I have seen. It would be a crime if Man United lose a goalkeeper like David de Gea."

Ten Hag stated last week that he anticipates De Gea to remain at Old Trafford this summer, though he cautioned that he could not promise that he would continue to be the team's No. 1.

When questioned about staying at the club, the Dutchman replied: Yes, but I will not say he'll always be my No.1 because in a club like Man United there must be competition in all positions. You can’t do it with 11 players. It is impossible. You need double positions."

Latest reports suggests that the 32 year old will be heading for the Red Devils exit following interests from Saudi Arabia. David De Gea could join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kareem Benzema in the middle East come next season if he fails to extend his contract at Old Trafford
