Erik ten Hag has received a warning from Manchester United's legend Dwight Yorke that he has "nowhere to hide" after finishing the season with more Premier League losses than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
"There's nowhere to hide. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a better record than Ten Hag in his full two seasons managing the club, people talk about the progress we've made and the better style of football being played. Manchester United have reached the FA Cup final, won the Carabao Cup and made it far in the Europa League so that is progress, but Ten Hag losing more Premier League games than Solskjaer in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons has to be called out."
"The results have not been good enough this season, Manchester United are looking over their shoulder and are desperately trying to hold onto fourth place, I'm not sure that's where the club wants to be," Yorke asserted.
The ex-United frontman, who hit 65 goals for the club through 152 appearances, added: “You can't hide in these circumstances, the players and the manager alike need to be called out. Ten Hag gets the praise when the team is playing well, he has to take the criticism when it goes wrong too."
"The disappointing thing in my observation in these games is that Manchester United don't know how to win ugly, it always has to be a pretty game of football. We rarely win games 1-0, football is not about scoring loads of goals, it's about getting the results and rolling your sleeves up in certain games, like the West Ham game.”
Manchester United were having a good season until they bottled a 2-0 lead against La Liga side Sevilla at Old Trafford during the first leg of the Europa League quarter finals clash of the 2022/2023 season.
The 6 times Europa League Champions fought back late into the encounter, which has seen Man United lose Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez to serious injuries. The return leg in Spain saw Erik Ten Hag's side crumble to a 3-0 loss, which was majorly due to individual errors.
Their season then nose dived which saw them throw away leads against Tottenham Hotspur and recorded back to back losses against Brighton and West Ham. This has put their hopes of sealing a spot in Europe elite competition in jeopardy. As they have arch rivals Liverpool, seriously breathing down their necks with just a point.
Erik Ten Hag's side needs to pick three wins out of their remaining four games if they still want to stand the chances of qualifying.
Majorly, their nine defeats in the league happened away from Old Trafford, apart from the 2-1 loss on opening day against Brighton Albion, Erik Ten Hag's side have been unbeaten at home. And that's an advantage they can utilize as three of their remaining four Premier League games will be played at Old Trafford.
