"40 goals"- Erik Ten Hag reveals Marcus Rashford's target for next campaign

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, thinks Marcus Rashford can score 40 goals in a single season.

Ten Hag praised Rashford for scoring 30 goals in the press conference before the final Premier League match of the year against Fulham.

With his goal against Chelsea on Thursday, Rashford became the first United player to accomplish the feat since Robin van Persie during the team's most recent championship campaign. Although it is a significant improvement over the five goals he scored the entire previous campaign, Ten Hag is already urging Rashford to score even more.

After losing favor under Ralf Rangnick during the close of the previous season, the academy grad has been one of the success stories of the Ten Hag era.

He is now more effective than ever and poses a serious threat to United when playing at center forward or on the left, but Ten Hag is adamant that the 25-year-old still has more to offer.

"There's a lot of room for improvement in his game. I'm convinced he can score even more," he said.

"When you take, for instance, the last 10 games he didn't score many goals. I think only two or three, so yes he can improve. I am happy from what he did last season to now that he brings himself back."

"He can improve but I’m happy. Where he was last season and what he did now and that he brings himself back.

“We supported him where we could, with the way we play but also in his mental mindset. So we are happy with that.

“But yeah, we have to push for more and I’m sure he’s capable to score 40 goals in a season. And to also make, for him, the next step.”

The Dutchman has his eye on Harry Kane and is aware that his team needs to score more goals because United is still one goal short of the 57 they scored last year.

"We need across the squad we need more scoring abilities. You can't be dependent on one. But it can also come from this squad but we need more scoring abilities," he said.

Before Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford, there were many uncertainties over Rashford's future with United.

The England international, who scored just five goals last season, was possibly at the bottom of his career. He gave off the impression of a player who lacked faith in his capacity to outmuscle defenders.

He is performing at his best because of Ten Hag. The change Rashford has experienced this season is something no one could have predicted.

He became the first United player since Robin van Persie to achieve 30 goals in a single season with his most recent goal against Chelsea. He played a key role in Ten Hag's productive first season in England.

Without a recognized number nine, the Red Devils would have had trouble scoring without him.

Rashford must now demonstrate the same consistency for the upcoming season. If he can reach his manager's 40-goal target, his stocks are rising and might reach new heights.
