'The club have no choice '- Erik Ten Hag issued Marcus Rashford's contract headache warning

In order to retain Marcus Rashford, Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Manchester United must deviate from their anticipated salary guideline. Since Erik ten Hag was hired back in the summer, the England international has been on fire, scoring 27 goals in all categories. His long-term status with the team, however, is uncertain right now.

Rashford has improved under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick at Manchester United after initially suffering under those managers prior to this season.

However, it recently came to light that the 25-year-old was refusing the offer of a new deal at a time when a takeover of the club was being considered.

As they prepare for a better future under Ten Hag's leadership, Manchester United is hoping to implement a salary limit that would prevent players from making more than £200,000 per week.

Agbonlahor, however, believes the Red Devils should abandon that strategy in order to make sure their No. 10 accepts the contract, "The club don’t have a choice,” the former Aston Villa star told Football Insider.

“If he doesn’t get what he wants at United, he would get it anywhere else. Any other top club would pay that."

"The wage cap has to be smashed. I can see Rashford getting £400,000-a-week, because of the position he’s in."

“He’s got Man United in a corner. He won’t be in a rush to sign anything, and it’s a headache for the club because they now can’t afford to lose him," Gabriel Agbonlahor explained.

This season, Marcus Rashford has scored 27 goals for United in all categories, becoming the team's talisman in the process.

But considering his electrifying performances this season, it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils make a financial exception for their No 10.

Rashford will become the first player to score 30 goals for the team in all categories since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013 if he scores just three goals.

However, United is eager to draw lessons from the past. Large contracts have previously been awarded, only for those choices to prove disastrous.

Alexis Sanchez is an instant, the Chilean received a contract worth £400,000 per week when he transferred from Arsenal in January 2018. Only five goals would be scored by the forward during his catastrophic stay at Old Trafford.

Sanchez recently asserted, however, that he didn't join United for the money and that Jose Mourinho instead charmed him into rejecting Manchester City's overtures.

“I was about to go to City. I spoke to Guardiola every day, he told me happy birthday. He was like my dad. He was my dad at Barcelona and he was like my dad at City,” Sanchez told TVN in a recent interview.

“We talked, we talked every day, he sent me messages. And everything was ready, there was a player who was going to go to Arsenal."

“Then Wenger tells me you are not leaving because the other player did not want to come and they do not have another."

"Suddenly the cell phone rings. Mourinho tells me: ‘Alexis, here is the seven available for you.’"

“It wasn’t a money thing, so everyone knows. It was the same with United and City. And he said to me here is the seven, we are playing in the Champions League and we are going to give everything."

“I wanted to leave at that moment, but I had Guardiola’s word. That’s when I said to myself, Chilean footballer playing for Manchester United, something that has never happened."

“With the seven of Cantona, Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and now a Chilean had it, it was a dream," he explained.
