"He's got an engine"- Forest Green Rovers manager Duncan Ferguson hails 19 year old Charlie Savage

Charlie Savage, who joined Forest Green Rovers on loan from Manchester United, has impressed manager Duncan Ferguson.

Ferguson is having a great week after he managed Forest Green to a 1-0 victory over automatic promotion contenders Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday. Jordon Garrick's goal came after 35 minutes.

Despite still being at the bottom of League One, Forest Green had a successful afternoon. Charlie Savage, who led the line admirably for 94 minutes, was essential to their successful performance and outcome.

Prior to Garrick's goal, the Manchester United loanee missed a good opportunity to start the scoring by shooting wide after Wednesday had gotten themselves into trouble.

The 19-year-old, who is the son of former Blackburn, Leicester, and Derby midfielder Robbie Savage, has scored just once in seven appearances so far, but Ferguson is still impressed with what he's seeing from Savage.

As quoted by talkSPORT, Ferguson said: "He’s been fantastic for me.

"On Sunday (against Sheffield Wednesday), he covered more than 12km. He was wearing the vest that tracks his distance.

"That’s incredible. He’s 19-years old, what an engine he’s got. And he’s a good player."

Charlie Savage has only ever made one senior appearance for Man United, coming on as a substitute against Young Boys in the Champions League in December 2021.

The adaptable adolescent made an impression while playing for the club's youth program and is currently working hard to establish a career while on loan at Forest Green.

That will enable him to step out from under the shadow of his father, Robbie, a Wales international who appeared in the Premier League almost 350 times.

"He’s like his dad. Enthusiastic, runs around," Ferguson continued.  "He was the highest-distance player on Sunday so that just shows you the character of the kid."

Portsmouth will play Forest Green at Fratton Park on Saturday in a game that will determine who finishes last in League One. Duncan Ferguson is coming off really well this week, obviously encouraged by finally earning his first victory while leading Forest Green.

He's promoting high standards at the organization and is especially pleased with Savage's attitude ever since he was brought in on loan from Man United. As he continues to look for a break and begins to craft a career to rival his father, the youngster is obviously driven to succeed in the coming months.
