Manchester United left back Luke Shaw has dismissed the celebration of the team's progress to the Carabao Cup's final following a 5-0 aggregate scoreline against Nottingham Forest in a two legged semi final tie.
Luke Shaw recovered from his illness in time to start for Manchester United in the Carabao Cup semifinal. Luke Shaw had missed both the first leg and the victory over Reading in the FA Cup fourth round.
The defender enjoyed a smooth defensive performance as United defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 on the night and 5-0 overall.
Luke Shaw was effective on the field, but it was his post-game remarks that stood out and demonstrated that he understood the circumstances.
He was defensively solid for United, winning two aerial duels, three interceptions, and one tackle. Shaw was able to complete 65 of 67 passes for a completion percentage of 97 percent while making a total of 106 touches.
Luke Shaw did a post-game interview to Sky Sports when he wasn't feeling self-congratulatory and was instead concentrating on the work ahead.
Shaw said: “I think there’s no point going to a final if you don’t win it.
“We want to get this club back to where it should be which is winning trophies. Newcastle are an extremely good team but it’s a big moment for us in where we want to go.”
Luke Shaw aligns with the authority of a player who recognizes the gravity of the situation. He hasn't participated in any of United's prior championship wins or losses due to horrible injury luck during his stay at the club.
He sustained an injury prior to United's final visit to Wembley, which was for the 2020 FA Cup semifinal match against Chelsea.
He is aware of United's journey and the monumental nature of winning the trophy. But if you lose, it'll be a very miserable day.
The player is correct to assume nothing. It will be a very long 90 minutes, possibly with additional time and penalties.
Manchester United's manager Erik Ten Hag has agreed with his player on the attitude his side must show ahead of the Wembley showdown with Newcastle United in the final.
While speaking separately, Erik ten Hag told the club website: “It’s great. Finals, you play them to win. It’s not an achievement to come into a final.
“We want to win. First, we have other things to do, and come back to the Premier League. I told the players as well, you have to bring it every game.”
