Manchester United's legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has taken to Twitter to congratulate David De Gea after the Spaniard equaled his record of 180 clean sheets for Manchester United.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel expressed nothing but love for current Red Devils No. 1 David De Gea after the Spaniard's blank versus Leicester City on Sunday tied the Danish goalie's club record of 180 clean sheets.
In the first half, David De Gea made outstanding saves as he prevented Leicester City's Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho from finding the back of the net, helping the Red Devils preserve the scoreline at 0-0 against the Foxes. Manchester United eventually won 3-0 as a result of David's outstanding play.
With his 180th shutout against Leicester since joining the team in 2011, David, 32, has now surpassed Schmeichel, another United icon, to take the lead in the list.
Peter tweeted to the former Atletico Madrid academy graduate, who arrived at the club as a teenager during the climax of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign as manager at Old Trafford.
"great achievement.”
The 180th clean sheet was hard earned, but well deserved with two out-of-this-world saves.
"Well done @D_DeGea, many congratulations, what a fantastic achievement," the former Manchester United goalkeeper tweeted.
David De Gea will now be anticipating to break the record, which he certainly will before the season runs out, and cement his status as one of the Manchester United greats.
The Spaniard has already made over 500 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, which puts him in the top 10 all-time appearance list at the club. He is also the non-British player with the most Premier League appearances for a single club (400). It has indeed been a journey for the 32-year-old, whose greatest vision as a newcomer back in 2011 was to become a legend at Old Trafford.
He will be set to help Erik Ten Hag's side eliminate Xavi Hernandez's Barcelona and also help end the club's trophy drought when they play Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.
