Manchester United left back Luke Shaw has tagged Casemiro's absence from the team due to suspension as a big loss. The Brazilian will return to the starting lineup when the Red Devils play Barcelona in the Europa League knockout phase.
England international and Manchester United's left back Luke Shaw has reacted to questions regarding the team's progress after a disastrous start. Since their chaotic opening-day loss to Brighton Albion at Old Trafford and disgraceful 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford in London, Erik Ten Hag's side has lost just four times in 34 games across all competitions, keeping nine clean sheets.
Luke Shaw reflected on the team's collective progress and his own personal improvement as a player under Erik Ten Hag's guidance.
"I think obviously not just myself, but I think the team in the first two games was nowhere near where we should have been at," the defender told the press at Spotify Nou Camp stadium.
"It was obviously a very difficult start, but I think we've learned from that and we've grown as a team, not just as individuals, but as a team."
"I think now collectively it's showing in our performances and where we're going." Of course, it helps with the manager; he's been really good and has shown a lot of trust in me. "My main thing now is to repay that trust with good performances and to help the team as much as possible," he explained.
Luke Shaw also stressed that the team's improved performance is due to Casemiro's arrival. Evidently, the Brazilian has become an important member of Erik Ten Hag's team after he was slowly integrated into the squad after he joined from Real Madrid.
The £60 million signing gave the needed shield to the team's defense and the license to play attacking football with confidence to Erik Ten Hag's team. Man United have yet to lose a game in which he starts; however, they have struggled with him off the pitch. Their loss to Arsenal in January was partly due to his absence and their recent unconvincing performances against Leeds United.
The player has been serving a three-match ban due to suspension; he will still miss one more game against Leicester City before he is recalled back to the matchday squad.
"I think it's been quite obvious to see how important he is to the team when he's not been playing," said Shaw during the pre-match press conference on Wednesday evening.
"For us as defenders, he gives us that feeling that we know there's a lot of security, especially because of his positioning, where he always is."
"He loves to win the ball back and tackle. We always say to him that he likes to give the ball away so he can go and win it back!
"I think he's an extremely important player for us, and I'm very happy to have him back tomorrow night because, like I said, he's been a big miss for us."
