Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has revealed that the Carabao Cup is the first of many more trophies to come at Old Trafford, but indicated that the success of the team in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday was down to the player mentality coupled with the hard work of the staff at Man United.
"First, we have to win the first one [trophy] and that is what we did today," Erik Ten Hag stated during his post match interview.
"I think we get a lot of inspiration from this and also more confidence that we can do it. We are still at the start to restore Manchester United back to where we belong, that is winning trophies. This is the first one."
The 53 year old tactician also analyzed the impact of some individuals on the team while stating that the team's spirit was key to winning the final.
"It was definitely the right spirit, there is very good spirit in the team," Erik Ten Hag explained.
"We act as a team and fight for everything. We beat them, it was not always the best football but I think it was effective."
"What you see is they are really well connected with each other - also they challenge each other and, in moments, they help each other when it's difficult. It's great to see. I think it's the best a manager can get," he stated.
"I said before the game," the manager continued. "Rapha Varane, Casemiro, David De Gea. They know how to win trophies. You need such lads on the pitch to point the team, coach the team, organise the team."
"Not only from a tactical perspective but also, especially, the mental perspective. It's so important, the winning attitude. They have to bring it in the dressing room and bring it to the team. In difficult situations, they have to handle it and that's what they did again."
Erik Ten Hag emphasized that himself and the players invested with the club's staffs at the start of the season and he is glad they are getting results. However, he isn't satisfied but winning a trophy is a good sign that the team is on the 'right path'.
"We invested from the start of the season with the staff. I want to say the staff did an incredibly good job with the players but also the staff and players are together. Also, you see the fans, they stay, and it was really harmonious and the desire is for trophies."
"It shows something, silverware, that you are on a good pathway, a good direction. It's one cup, it's February, but it shows we are on the right path. This has to be the motivation to continue on this pathway. Be happy for 24 hours but not satisfied," Erik Ten Hag indicated.
