Newcastle United is expressing interest in Jurrien Timber, a highly regarded Ajax defender.
Exclusive to NUFC Blog, Football Transfers writer Steve Kay has been informed that the 21-year-old is being taken into consideration as we look for a right-sided center-back who can challenge Fabian Schar for the starting spot and partner with Sven Botman.
Despite having played alongside the former Lille star for the Dutch U21 team, Timber defeated Botman to a spot in the Netherlands' World Cup squad last year.
His limitations in the air may be a worry because, at 5 feet 10 inches, he is short for a center-back. Thought to appeal to the club's recruitment squad are his pace, versatility (he can also play right defender), Champions League experience, and promise.
Timber, who is likely to quit the Eredivisie giants this summer, has been linked to moves to both Manchester United and Liverpool, both of which are led by former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.
Newcastle United ace Sven Botman opened up about his international team mate and fellow defender Jurrien Timber.
“I’ve been told from one good source that Newcastle are looking at Jurrien Timber at Ajax."
“They are looking to bring in another right-sided centre-back to compete with Fabian Schar and play alongside Sven Botman; who he’s played alongside for the Dutch U21 side."
"Timber has Champions League experience and is a versatile defender who can also play at right-back, so it makes plenty of sense."
“He ticks boxes, fits the profile Eddie Howe is targeting as a young, quick centre-back and could be an ideal long-term partner for Botman."
Gary Neville, Manchester United's legend, believes that David de Gea must leave the Red Devils either soon or in the summer of 2024.
The end of the current season will mark the end of the Spain international's contract with the Old Trafford team. How long the 32-year-old will remain at the Manchester-based club is unknown.
Neville, though, asserted during an interview with Sky Bet's The Overlap on YouTube that United should search for a fresh top spot. If not right away, the former defender thinks the Red Devils should at least get rid of De Gea the next season.
"They do need to get rid of him either now or if they’ve not got the money then obviously a year later is the maximum.”
The Spaniard has now played for the Old Trafford team for more than ten years. The 32-year-old was acquired by the Manchester-based team from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, and ever since then, he has been the first choice.
However, De Gea has had trouble being consistent since the 2018 World Cup. When Dean Henderson joined the team, the seasoned goalie briefly lost his spot as a starter.
However, the Englishman, who played at Nottingham Forest on loan during the 2022–23 season, was unable to defeat the Spanish player.
The 32-year-old has been used as United's goalkeeper by Erik ten Hag. The shot-stopper has put on some remarkable performances, but he has also committed a lot of flagrant mistakes.
The way De Gea distributes the ball is quite lacking. The coach appears to want to play the ball out from behind, which the seasoned goalie does not appear to be particularly comfortable doing.
There is a perception that the 32-year-old's tenure with the Old Trafford squad is over. Evidently, we require a shot-stopper who compliments Ten Hag's playing style in order to get the best performance out of the team. However, it will be intriguing to see if the club decides to keep the Spaniard on board for the time being.
