Maestro: Bruno Fernandes beats De Bruyne to end season long Premier League debate

This season, Manchester United's Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes led the Premier League in chances created, surpassing Kevin De Bruyne in the standings.

With 119 opportunities produced, the 28-year-old leads Kieran Trippier (110) and Kevin De Bruyne, who concluded the season with 98. Fernandes also tops the charts for large chances created, with the United player benefiting from the metric for higher-quality chances; with 32, he is barely ahead of De Bruyne, who is at 31.

, According to these numbers, the person who topped both rankings would own the most assists. Although Fernandes scored eight goals as United finished third and City won its fifth league championship in six years, De Bruyne has been the most prolific goal scorer this season, with a total that is double that of Fernandes.

With 70 significant opportunities squandered this season, United is one of the most wasteful teams, trailing only Liverpool (78) in the rankings. United failed to score goals and had to rely on winger Marcus Rashford to fill in as a striker.

The problem is anticipated to be remedied in the summer, with Erik ten Hag's primary transfer target being Harry Kane.

Mason Mount, is rumored to be a top target for Old Trafford, which might relieve Fernandes of some of the creative strain.

Under ten Hag, Fernandes has been able to develop in a more creative capacity thanks to the addition of Casemiro. Nevertheless, the lack of a striker negated his greatest efforts because De Bruyne might have given Erling Haaland, who scored 35 league goals, more opportunities.

This season, the top flight's most productive pairing has been De Bruyne and Haaland, who have assisted each other eight times. Intriguingly, De Bruyne bested Fernandes by this margin in the assist rankings, with the presence of Haaland clearly having a positive effect on City's title victory.

However, with six goals from his combinations with Rashford, Fernandes finished in second place. However, if newcomers alter the dynamic of the United midfield and attack as Ten Hag plans his first Champions League season, he could need to find a new position the following year.

The FA Cup final between United and City is this weekend, and despite the praise that has come his way, Fernandes has reiterated that United is not satisfied with their season and that a top-four finish should not be the end of their objectives.

When asked if the campaign had been a success in the run-up to United's final game of the season against Fulham, Fernandes said, "No. Although the season has been good, it hasn't been successful because this club defines success differently than us players must do."

“As players we're not happy just to get into the top four. We want more, we aim for more, because we believe in this team that there are enough qualities to go forward."

“We did win a trophy. We did get into the top four. Now we have another final, but whatever happens in that final will not change anything about the season."

“One game can't define a season that has been long, with so many games. We've been doing really well and had our moments where we could have done better. But still we won the Carabao Cup, we're in the final of FA Cup, in Europa League it could have been better, but it is what it is.”
