"We got punished"- Eddie Howe is finding it hard to move on from Carabao Cup final defeat to Man United

Eddie Howe has downplayed rumors that Newcastle United will seek revenge against Manchester United, but he believes his team has learned from the loss in the cup final.

Since Manchester United won the Carabao Cup final at Wembley and claimed the silverware, this will be the teams' first encounter.

Despite the setback, the Magpies are only three points behind their rivals in the standings after two straight victories entering the break.

"I think we've looked at the game and tried to break it down without any emotion and just try to look at the game and try and improve certain aspects of our performance," Eddie Howe stated during his press conference ahead of his side welcoming Man United to St James Park.

"We did a lot right, we did a couple of things wrong and got punished. That's the quality of the team we're playing against, that if for example you don't defend a wide free kick and you concede the first goal, those things swing momentum."

"At a moment in the game where I thought we were really competitive and probably the superior team, then that made it difficult from that moment onwards."

"I think you have to move on very quickly. I don't think you ever get over a defeat really, I think any defeat you have, as a manager, is still in there somewhere," the former Bournemouth boss explained.

"I tend not to dwell on it or think about it too much because it's history and you have to move on very quickly," he continued. "There will be occasions where I've just flashed back to a moment in the game or a feeling from the game that's still there as I say, so hopefully I can get rid of that quite quickly."

Miguel Almiron, the team's top scorer, will be sidelined for about four weeks due to a muscle injury, according to Howe. He also stated that he "does not know" if Anthony Gordon will be ready for selection.

He is still optimistic Nick Pope, who suffered a thigh injury in their most recent game against Nottingham Forest, will be ready to play again, and Sven Botman, who had to leave the Netherlands camp due to food poisoning, is once again a contender. Allan Saint-Maximin is eligible following his injury comeback.

Casemiro, who scored in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, won't be available for Manchester United because he's serving a four-game suspension, but Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will be after they've recovered from injuries.
