Manchester United on loan striker Wout Weghorst has been told he must'step up' after yet to score a Premier League goal, according to Sky Sports writer Dharmesh Sheth, who spoke with GIVEMESPORT.
Since moving to Old Trafford, the 30-year-old hasn't been the most productive attacker, but he still contributes to a respectable quantity of goals. According to reports, Weghorst makes £120,000 a week at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag and his recruiting team were in desperate need of another offensive option during the January transfer window, so the Dutch forward agreed to join United on loan from Championship club Burnley.
Since joining the Manchester club, Weghorst has had trouble finding the back of the net, but ten Hag has continued to have faith in the former Besiktas loanee.
Ten Hag provided an explanation for starting Weghorst so frequently in a media interview last month.
He said: "Of course I tell him to [help] linking up there, which he is also doing as a high striker. But in that position, [he is] linking up and getting in front of the goal when crosses are coming in. As for the rest, there is the defending part which he is also very good [at]."
"Why does he start every game? Because he is capable. He is physically capable to play a lot of games. He is a very fit player, and he recovers very well."
Wout Weghorst needs to start contributing to goals more at United, according to Sheth.
He mentioned this to GIVEMESPORT: We all know about his goalscoring record. He's only scored two goals in all competitions, no Premier League goals at all so far. He's going to need to step up as well.
"I think for United to have gone on the run that they have and for Rashford to score all the goals that he has, when Weghorst has been a first-team player during that time, I think he's contributed in other ways."
"But now, I think ten Hag will need contribution from the other players, not only in assisting but in scoring those goals as well."
The Dutch international is failed to score in the Premier League this season, as was previously mentioned.
With an average Sofascore rating of 6.67, he hasn't really contributed much up top for the Red Devils and is currently ranked 21st on the United squad.
However, according to WhoScored, his goal and assists in the Carabao Cup significantly contributed to their ability to win the trophy. However, if they want to advance their team, an upgrade may be required in the summer.
Manchester United set to lose the race for Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries
The right-back position at Manchester United is a difficult one to evaluate given the performances of both possibilities.
In Diogo Dalot, who participated in all but one of the games leading up to the World Cup, manager Erik ten Hag appeared to have found his de facto full-back at the start of the season.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the former incumbent, has excelled since the Qatar World Cup where he was injured, and the management has started him in the important matches.
According to reports from The Peoples Person, however, Ten Hag is willing to let the former Crystal Palace star go and has requested that the club come to an agreement on a new contract with the Portuguese player.
Several right-backs have been connected to the Red Devils, but current rumours claim that Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen is the front-runner to play at Old Trafford.
Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan was heavily linked to the 20-time English league champions in the summer and in January, but it now appears that his ultimate destiny is somewhere else.
The Dutch full-back has played 38 times this year, scoring two goals and dishing out six assists while primarily playing higher up the field.
The 26-year-old is up for sale at Inter, and initially it appeared like Chelsea and the Reds were in a tie for his services. Aston Villa, a Premier League powerhouse, appears to have gotten the jump on its competitors.
As his team appears certain to compete in Europe next season, Unai Emery has settled on Dumfries as the ideal aggressive full-back he needs.
According to Italian outlet Tuttomercato, “The initial tepid interests of Chelsea and Manchester United have slipped away, in the Premier League he would have received concrete interest from of Aston Villa."
“Unai Emery has only Matty Cash in the role and with the injury of the Pole he is forced to deploy Ashley Young on the right. That’s why he wants a player in the summer and the name of Dumfries is one of those held most in consideration in Birmingham.”
Dalot and Wan-Bissaka have both shown they can handle the position, so United supporters won't be overly dissatisfied if Dumfries heads elsewhere. In addition, there are other key areas that need to be strengthened first.
