'It's a great boost for us'- Harry Maguire states the advantage of Eriksen and Anthony Martial's return

In addition to praising the return of two important Manchester United players, Harry Maguire acknowledged that he thinks he has a "responsibility" to support the team's further development.

As Manchester United defeated Everton 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday, the 30-year-old received a rare Premier League start. The former Leicester defender, who has been marginalized by Erik ten Hag, has bided his time on the substitutes' bench. He has participated in matches both domestically and in Europe. But in the league this season, Ten Hag has only started him six times.

The goals scored by Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial put the Red Devils in fourth place in the Premier League standings. Now that he has recovered from his injury, Anthony Martial is rejoining the team. When Christian Eriksen made his first appearance since January in the 77th minute, he came off the bench at the 60th minute.

And according to Maguire, the pair will likely play a significant role up until the campaign's conclusion.

“It’s huge [to have them back],” he told BBC Sport. “I’ve spoken about the squad already. We need high competition for places."

“It’s great to have Anthony back and Christian came on and really helped see the game out for us. It’s a great boost for us to have them back and available for the crucial part of the season.”

Since his arrival at Manchester United in July 2019, Maguire had been a frequent starter. With his performance making him a lock for England, the former Sheffield United player has accrued 55 caps to date.

Despite being outside of United's Premier League squad, Gareth Southgate is still calling him. There have been numerous rumors that the center back will leave in the off-season in search of greater playing time. The player who has seven goals for England is still committed to helping United in whatever way he can.

“It’s great to lead the lads out at Old Trafford and get a clean sheet and get three points,” he added.

“I have a responsibility to make sure the club moves forward and that’s whether I’m playing or not. I feel like my form has been good for England and Manchester United.”

Harry Maguire's future at the Theatre of Dreams when this season is over is uncertain. He has a contract that runs through June 2025. The former Hull City player is aware that in order to secure a regular starting position, he must continue to work incredibly hard.

“I respect and know that we have good competition in my position at this club,” he continued. “There’s four top international centre-backs at this club and we are all pushing to be the best.”

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford picked up an injury during the 2-0 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, the 25 year old had to be substituted as he couldn't carry on, Erik Ten Hag gave an injury update afterwards.

“I can’t say in this moment, you are doctor, maybe? I am not.’ ten Hag added. ‘I We have to wait, how bad or how good it is. Obviously he went off with a complaint, now we have to wait, set a diagnosis and we will see.
