'Normally, I never react to media topic'- Wout Weghorst gives reason for touching the 'This is Anfield'sign

Manchester United's striker Wout Weghorst has responded to the critics after he was Scrutinized for touching the iconic 'This is Anfield ' sign in the players tunnel when heading out for the game between Manchester United and Arch rival Liverpool last Sunday.

It's the tradition for Liverpool players to touch the iconic sign when stepping on to the pitch from their dressing room during home games at Anfield but no one ever expected an opponent, worse still a rival player to take part in this tradition.

Wout Weghorst has always professed that he would love to play for Liverpool in interviews back in 2020 and 2018, but the Netherlands international has ended up playing for the Merseysiders fierce rival after joining the Red Devils on a loan deal till the end of the season last January.

The player has been dragged heavily by Manchester United fans on Twitter and the 30 year old Burnley loanee has broken his silence and given an explanation for his action.

"Normally I never react on media topics, but for this one it’s worth it because you amazing United fans are important to me. So I just want to clarify the video that is doing the rounds," Weghorst said.




"From the national team I know that Virgil always touches that sign and I went to stop him touching it to try and wind him up before the game."

He went ahead to stress he has no affinity for Liverpool and underlined where his loyalty lies.

"As a child I always supported FC Twente, and as a player now for Manchester United, my dedication to this incredible club can never be questioned."

The 30 year old striker also stressed that himself and his teammates will bounce back from their 7-0 trumping at the hands of Liverpool when next they play.

"Sunday was a terrible day for all of us, we are putting everything into making it right in the next weeks. We will bounce back together and achieve our aims this season."

Following footage that emerged showing the number 27 touching the 'This is Anfield' sign on the team's way out for their first half against Liverpool, fans have vented their fury at the 30 year old. It was a just means for fans to transfer their aggression following their team's humiliation.

One particularly furious supporter wrote: "I don't care about his Carabao Cup pictures anymore." He has to leave the club at the end of his six-month term. THIS VIDEO is enough to let him go. "How the hell can you touch the Anfield sign as a Manchester United player?"
