Manchester United's manager Erik Ten Hag believes that the side that is more brave and shows more resilience will carry the day when his side lineups against Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday evening.
Manchester United are on an 11-match unbeaten run and are anticipating extending their grip on the top four spots of the Premier League table. They have managed to turn their season around under Erik Ten Hag and have the Carabao Cup to show for it.
Liverpool are rejuvenating after being humilated by Real Madrid a couple of weeks ago in the UEFA Champions League; they have kept four clean sheets since then and have also moved up the Premier League table to sixth, trailing Man United with 10 points. Both clubs have met for the first time this season back in August at Old Trafford in the first leg of the Premier League fixture, which Man United won 2-1 in front of their home fans.
Regardless of the difference between the two archrivals in terms of performances this season, Erik Ten Hag agreed that both sides are made up of world-class players, but the side with more character and resilience will win the fixture on Sunday evening.
When asked by the club's media during his press conference about what or who could make the difference given both teams are stacked with world beaters, Erik Ten Hag replied: "The character makes a difference." The one who is the most resilient and has the most spirit in the team "Whoever is most brave will win the game."
"Mentality is one of the decisive factors on Sunday." We know we have to play our best to get the right result there.
"We are very excited." I am really looking forward to it, and we know we can expect a strong opposition and a hostile ambience, and we are really looking forward to performing there.
Bayern Munich loanee Marcel Sabitzer has also indicated that the Red Devils have what it takes to beat Jurgen Klopp's side in front of their Kop crowd, stressing that Man United have the strength and quality.
"I’ve never played at Anfield [in front of fans], so I’m looking forward to it,” Sabitzer told club media in a recent interview. “I know it’s a massive game for United, for the fans, for the club. We have to be ready and focused on Sunday. We want to win this game.
“That’s it, there is a gap now [between the two teams], but we have to win this game, and I think we have the strength and the quality to beat them at Anfield.”
Marcel Sabitzer is yet to find the back of the net for Manchester United since he joined in January, but he is optimistic about scoring soon. He was very close to scoring against West Ham during the midweek clash in the FA Emirates Cup, but was denied by a brilliant Alphonse Areola save.
"As you said, [my first goal is] getting closer and closer. I think it was a good shot [against West Ham] and a good save as well. "Hopefully, on Sunday against Liverpool, I will score my first one!”
