Anthony Elanga's goal in Sweden's victory over Azerbaijan on the international stage ended his scoring dry spell.
The young player for Manchester United came off the substitute as Sweden racked up a commanding 5-0 victory.
Since scoring against Norway in a UEFA Nations League match in May of last year, Anthony Elanga had not scored for club or country in ten months. Anthony Elanga's goal against Atletico Madrid in February 2022 was the last one he earned for Manchester United.
Anthony Elanga really made the most of his limited time on the field. He entered the game as a replacement in the 87th and two minutes later, he scored.
A 40-yard intercepted pass by Anthony Elanga allowed him to close in on goal, round the charging goalie, and score with his left foot.
It was a goal that was scored with precision by a player who appeared to be full of confidence rather than one who has been missing. Although it is simple to point and say it was only against Azerbaijan, Anthony Elanga may need this development.
Only 675 minutes of football have been played by the 20-year-old this season for Manchester United. Since the transfer market closed at the end of January, he has only appeared in 27 minutes of Premier League action. Elanga might still have opportunities with United battling on three fronts and playing nine games in April.
This accomplishment will boost his marketability this summer, whether it be on a temporary or permanent basis, and help him regain his confidence.
Anthony Elanga expressed his dissatisfaction with his lack of playing time at Old Trafford to Aftonbladet over the weekend.
He said: “It is frustrating. You want to play, it’s important. But whether you play or not, it’s up to the coach not me. I have spoken to Erik [ten Hag] and it is private between the two of us. I know what he wants me to do and I just keep training hard.
“When the opportunity comes, I just have to be ready to take it.”
Anthony Elanga confirmed that rumors circulating the media about a number of clubs wanting him, especially on loan deals were true.
The academy graduate also affirmed that talks were held over a move away from Old Trafford in January.
"There was talk about it, but right now I'm focusing on United," he continued. "We still have a big season ahead of us and need to finish it as well as possible."
"That was in January, now I can't focus on it. The best I can do is focus on the rest of the season, then I get to talk to the club. I love the club, but it's important for me to play. I'm still young. We have spoken to the club and they know what is required and I know what is required."
