Team Injury update: Ten Hag announces Marcus Rashford injury and striker's absence ahead of Newcastle clash

Manchester United's manager has given insights into Marcus Rashford's injury scare after the England international was substituted during the Red Devils' Europa League victory over Barcelona on Thursday night.

Marcus Rashford couldn't shake off the niggling he got from a 50/50 challenge with Barcelona's Araujo in the second half of the Red Devils' encounter with the La Liga giants, so he was substituted and replaced with Scott McTominay, who played out the rest of the game as a striker.

The manager met with the media for his press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup's final against Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium. The 53-year-old was quizzed about the extent of the 25-year-old's injury, and Erik Ten Hag didn't give a detailed reply.

When he was asked if the player would be fit for the Sunday clash against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final,
"I don't know," Erik Ten Hag replied.

“Players are now coming in [to Carrington], and we have to do investigations and medical [checks]." Straight after a game, you can't say, "You have to wait for medical [checks].”

Erik Ten Hag also ruled out striker Anthony Martial's return ahead of the big game on Sunday afternoon. The 27-year-old has been out of the team since his brilliant cameo against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. The French international scored after coming on as a substitute. He is currently back in training, although he is training alone, as shown in a video posted by MEN's journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

When asked if he would be available for the team on Sunday, Erik Ten Hag simply replied "no."

"No, he will not be available," Erik told reporters.

Manchester United's duo of Antony Santos and team captain Harry Maguire returned to the team against Barcelona on Thursday night, with the former playing a role as the Red Devils pulled a famous victory over the Catalans to proceed to the next round of the Europa League competition.

Casemiro will be available for the big day on Sunday alongside Scott McTominay; however, Donny Van De Beek and Christian Eriksen are still very much out due to their long-term injuries.

Nick Pope, the Magpies' first-choice goalie, will not be available due to a suspension stemming from his recent Premier League dismissal against Liverpool. Martin Dubravka, a teammate who plays goalkeeping, is out of the cup after representing United in it earlier this season while on loan at Old Trafford.

Therefore, Eddie Howe is expected to either select Mark Gillespie, who last played in goal for the club's senior team in September 2020, or give former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius a competitive Newcastle debut.

Eddie Howe expressed optimism that midfielders Joelinton and Joe Willock, who suffered injuries in matches against Liverpool and Bournemouth, respectively, earlier this month, would be able to participate in his pre-game news conference earlier this week. Emil Krafth, a Swedish defender, has been missing for a while.
