Manchester United's manager Erik Ten Hag has refused to delve into the European Super League debate, as the former Ajax boss claimed he will form his own thoughts about the revamped agenda if the need arises.
A22 Sports Management, a European development organization, is pushing a redesigned Super League after the original league failed after 48 hours of its April 2021 debut. Joel Glazer, a co-chairman of United, announced the project, but the club's supporters vehemently objected to it and caused the delay of the home Premier League match against Liverpool on May 2, 2021.
Bernd Reichart, the chief executive of A22, claimed that "the foundations of European football are at risk of collapsing," but English club supporters are sure to reject the suggestion.
The revamped proposal was raised at Ten Hag's pre-match press conference on Friday, and the Man United boss stated: "I'm aware of the dynamics of what's going on in sections, but if I see they're coming up with new ideas, I have to have a look at it and I will form an opinion."
"So I'm not aware because we are playing so many games at this moment." "We have to develop this team; we have some problems with new players to bring in, so that's where my focus is, and therefore I need all my energy."
"About the new European competitions, other people at the club will have a look at it and inform me if the time is right and we have to make decisions." "But the decision is up to the club."
"I think the current structure is good, but there will always be initiatives to make it better, to make the football better, and that is what life is; people always want to construct better, which is a good thing because if it is in favor of the football, it is always good."
A 20-team league with 12 founding member clubs made up the Super League's original blueprint. Prior to a significant backlash, the founding members of United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid joined.
The manager went ahead to address a comment about him and his management deriving a sense of joy from working with youngsters and harnessing their potentials to become world-class, despite the difficulties and challenges faced in the process.
"That makes this job so exciting." Erik Ten Hag replied.
"It is wonderful to work with young people and get the best out of them." Finally, they have to do it by themselves, but often they need motivation and a push. "Sometimes they need an interjection and also inspiration for a plan.”
Regarding the team's recent injury woes and players' absences, Erik Ten Hag has emphasized the areas in which this is affecting the team's progress and how he and his management are struggling to deal with it.
"It is not easy, as you have to replace some players." The routines are not there, and this is obvious. "We had the combination over the last few weeks on the right with Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] and Antony," he explained.
"Now there is a new combination in the holding midfield position as we have to bring in a new player as Christian Eriksen is away. So the whole midfield construction is new, and that takes time to bed in and get the routines again. This takes games, and that was obvious yesterday. "We played quite well, but both starts killed our game.”
