After Casemiro was sent off during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, manager Erik ten Hag of Manchester United indicated on Saturday that the club will think about appealing Casemiro's red card.
With 70 minutes remaining, the Brazilian, who has been a revelation since joining the team from Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid last summer, was dismissed for a collision with Palace midfielder Will Hughes. In the midst of a brawl between both teams of players, Casemiro looked to seize Hughes after reacting violently to Jeffrey Schlupp's strong challenge on Antony.
Following a VAR review and a glance at the pitchside monitor, referee Andre Marriner determined that Casemiro's actions constituted aggressive conduct because the camera angle he had seen appeared to show the Brazil international grabbing Hughes by the neck. A another angle, however, revealed that Hughes' shirt collar, rather than his neck, had been grabbed by the United midfielder.
Manchester United will need to move fast if they decide to appeal the ruling because they play again on Wednesday night when they welcome Leeds at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils could consider these FA rules regarding the red card appeals process
What the Rules states
According to MEN, Players who receive a straight red cardare the only ones who can appeal; hence, players who receive a red card after receiving two cautions must serve their suspension without recourse. United must appeal to the FA in the "wrongful dismissal" category.
The incident will be examined by an impartial FA regulatory body, which will make a determination regarding whether Marriner's dismissal of Casemiro was appropriate. The panel must determine whether the Brazilian's behavior qualified as violent conduct in this case.
What is the player's fate if the appeal is rejected?
As it stands, Casemiro is set to miss the two games against Leeds and the match against Leicester City on February 19. United will not want another match to be added to his suspension. Right now, Casemiro won't be able to play again until United's match against Liverpool on March 5.
In the rare event that United decides to challenge the ruling, Casemiro's suspension will be extended by an additional game if the panel decides to reject the case as frivolous. That would prevent him from playing against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at the end of February.
If it is determined that there was cause for an appeal, it may be dismissed without the imposition of a game penalty. Players seldom get their three-game bans extended to four.
Manchester United must submit their case by Monday if they choose to appeal the decision within two days of the occurrence. They will almost probably learn the conclusion by Tuesday, the day before their match against Leeds at Old Trafford, if they decide to move forward with that choice.
