"He did really really well. Really pleased with him." Those were the words of Forest Green's manager Duncan Ferguson after Man United's loanee Charlie Savage made his debut during the league one's side defeat to Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.
During the January transfer window, Charlie Savage moved from Manchester United to Forest Green Rovers on loan.
He is on his first loan assignment away from Old Trafford and made his League 1 debut yesterday night against Charlton. It was only his second senior appearance when he entered the game, which they lost 1-0 at home Friday night.
The new manager of Forest Green is Everton great Duncan Ferguson, who expressed his thoughts on Savage's performance to the club website following the game.
"He did really really well. Really pleased with him," Duncan Ferguson stated after the game
“That’s football, isn’t it? You get your chance, you’re ready. And one thing about Charlie is he works his socks off in training.
“He’s a great young man to work with every day and he’s full of energy and enthusiasm.
“That’s what you want. I thought he was absolutely excellent.”
Charlie Savage will be looking to build on his cameo effort from last night and win his first start for Duncan Ferguson's struggling team before too long. They are stuck at the bottom of the third tier standings, seven points from relegation, and have yet to record a victory under Duncan Ferguson's management.
Given that Simon Stone of the BBC stated that he had many other options, he cannot be accused of choosing the simple route. Charlie Savage runs the risk of falling into the same situation as another young Man United midfielder, Ethan Galbraith, who spent last season with Doncaster Rovers and was demoted from League 1.
The 19-year-old will attain men's football during this first loan of his professional career, going to and playing important games, and Red Devils fans will be watching his growth following this encouraging debut.
Elsewhere, Amad Diallo is making strides with Championship side Sunderland. He has scored seven times and made one assists across all competitions for the black cats this season. Hannibal Mejbri is also setting the pace with Birmingham City. The mid fielder scored a stunning free kick and assisted another goal to give the blues a 2-0 win over the weekend.
