Man United's chief John Murtough, opens talks with FC Porto over potential transfer

As reported by AS, United are attempting to sign Costa, who made his first-team debut for Porto last year and has since excelled.

The 21-year-old has no shortage of admirers; Chelsea is reportedly among them as they search for a replacement for departing star Edouard Mendy. However, the Red Devils seem to have gotten a jump on their competitors by starting negotiations with Porto right away.

According to reports, United is prepared to offer around £72 million to get Costa, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in history and surpassing Kepa Arrizabalaga's previous mark. It would be interesting to watch whether a bidding war for the goalie in January breaks out because so many clubs are looking for a long-term shot-stopper or if United is the only team ready to pay Porto's high asking price for their starting goalkeeper.

De Gea signing a new contract would undoubtedly reduce the need to bring in Costa, but that would mean he is willing to accept a significant pay drop from £375,000 per week to £100,000.Of course, Dean Henderson is a possibility for Ten Hag and has been playing regularly for Nottingham Forest this season, but he is not willing to go back to the Theatre of Dreams and be a backup to another goalie.

In his press conference earlier this week, Ten Hag gave De Gea a vote of confidence, saying: "I am extremely delighted with David. He's only 31 years old, physically fit, and capable of making even greater development. He was already effective for United and will continue to be."

The former Ajax manager also revealed that his team will be searching for a striker in January once Cristiano Ronaldo leaves. Although Liverpool has finally reached an agreement with PSV to sign the Netherlands international, Cody Gakpo was a priority target.
