Charlie Savage not sure of Man United's future after Forest Green loan stint

Following his return from a brief loan stint at Forest Green Rovers, Charlie Savage, a young player for Manchester United, is unsure about his ambitions for the upcoming season.

Savage, the son of former Wales international Robbie, signed a loan deal with Gloucestershire during the January transfer window in an effort to increase his chances of playing regularly for the first team. He appeared in 15 games for Rovers in total, scoring one goal, but it wasn't enough to keep them in League One.

Savage's brief stay at The New Lawn was his first senior loan assignment, so he will have learned a lot from his time playing for Duncan Ferguson's team. Along with Zidane Iqbal, he was one of United's standout players during their preseason trip last summer, and a loan stint at some time this season felt like a crucial step in his career.

Although it is probable that United would send the teenager out on loan once more the next season to get more experience, he still hopes to make it at Old Trafford.

"I think it's tough to say at the minute," Savage told the Press Association, addressing his plans for next season. "Obviously it's everyone's dream to make it at United when you've come through here as a boy, so I have to work as hard as I can and see where it takes me."

Although Savage was loaned out in January, he had previously worked closely with United's first-team players and manager Erik ten Hag and gained a lot of insight into the Dutchman's coaching style.

"I think United have had a really good season, winning the Carabao Cup and potentially winning an FA Cup, so I'd say he's done a really good job."

Charlie Savage is now eager to seize another opportunity in the preseason leading up to the 2023–24 season, but he is still receptive to what might come next.

I'd have liked to make my debut for Wales," added Savage. "I think that's the next one, not to tick off as such but that's my next aim along with just playing at the highest level I can.

"Whether that be on a better loan, at United or whatever it is. Football works in weird ways. you never know where you're going to be until maybe a week before."
