FIFA to determine Alejandro Gernacho's fate at Man United as Erik Ten Hag issues injury update

The formal selection of Argentina to host the FIFA Under-20 World Cup this year may have implications for Manchester United.

The event begins in May and as it is not contested during the international window, it conflicts with club games. Only this week, after Indonesia was relieved of its hosting duties, was the South American nation officially announced as the tournament's host. The decision was made in March in response to anticipated demonstrations against Israel's participation.

Although Argentina initially missed out on qualifying, it will now replace Indonesia and may choose to bring up Manchester United player Alejandro Garnacho. The winger, who last year switched to the United States from Spain, has been called up to the senior team but has not yet received a cap.

Although Argentina initially missed out on qualifying, it will now replace Indonesia and may choose to bring up Manchester United player Alejandro Garnacho. The winger, who last year switched to the United States from Spain, has been called up to the senior team but has not yet received a cap.

It might result in Argentina calling him up for a competition that starts on May 20. Garnacho might not make it to United's final stretch, which might include the FA Cup final in early June, because players would probably join up with their national teams around a week in advance.

The 18-year-old's participation is still uncertain, but his absence would be a setback for United given the contribution he has made this season. Garnacho has scored five goals in 31 appearances.

For the competition, Argentina was placed in the same bracket as New Zealand, Uzbekistan, and Guatemala. Six groups of four teams each have four teams, and 16 teams advance to the round of 16. The 2017 champions England will compete and will be placed in a group with Uruguay, Iraq, and Tunisia.

"I would like to thank the AFA and particularly its president Claudio Tapia, as well as the governmental authorities for their commitment to hosting this magnificent event at such short notice," FIFA President Gianni Infantino said of the decision to award the tournament to Argentina.

“The U20 World Cup plays a key role in FIFA’s efforts to promote youth football across the world. Since 1977, this tournament has featured some of the greatest players of the past decades, including Diego Armando Maradona, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba, Erling Haaland and many others. Having this year’s edition taking place in a country that lives and breathes football will be a tremendous inspiration for the stars of tomorrow.”

Man United's injury update

When Erik ten Hag delivered his pre-game press conference late on Friday afternoon, he stated that it was too soon following the Sevilla setback to provide any team news for Sunday's Emirates FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The coach did comment that the guys are "turning out quite well," but he would need to observe the team's evening practice to have a complete perspective.

"It is so short after the [final] whistle in Seville so I can't give a comment on it," Ten Hag told the club's media.

"We didn't train [yet], after training I will know more."

Bruno Fernandes, who was suspended for the Reds' Europa League away match against Sevilla, is expected to be eligible once more.

However, Harry Maguire will not be able to be chosen because of an accumulation of yellow cards and Victor Lindelof and the adaptable Luke Shaw appear to be the best options to play at center defense on Sunday, since Raphael Varane and injured Lisandro Martinez are both out of commission.

Shaw's replacement at left-back might be Tyrell Malacia, who made his way back into the matchday squad for Thursday night's game after initially missing last Sunday's trip to Forest. Given that he served in that capacity for our last two games, Diogo Dalot would also be given consideration for the position.

Anthony Martial was forced to leave Thursday's match in Spain due to injury; it is unknown at this time whether he will be able to reclaim his starting position. Midfielder Scott McTominay, who is anticipated to be out for a few more games, chose not to go at all in order to continue his recovery from a recent injury.

Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, Scott McTominay, and Fred are among the senior Manchester United players whose futures will be cleared out this summer under Erik ten Hag's direction.

The management will do this to raise money to reinvest in the team and raise its bar. The 3-0 humiliation against Sevilla on Thursday, which saw United eliminated 5-2 overall from the Europa League, has focused Ten Hag's evaluation of his team as he looks to continue his rebuild.

Donny van de Beek, Anthony Elanga, Dean Henderson, and Brandon Williams are further players that Ten Hag is considering allowing to depart.

The loaned players Alex Telles, Hannibal Mejbri, and Eric Bailly, as well as the free agents Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe, are all almost expected to leave the team.

Not every player whose future is in doubt will go because Ten Hag must strike a balance between letting go of individuals he does not want as first choices, making a select few outstanding additions, and maintaining the right level of squad depth. He might decide against selling both Maguire and Lindelöf because it might be challenging to find two new first-team squad center-backs; the former is expected to be let go.

David de Gea, who played with Maguire in Seville's defensive farce, has not yet agreed to a new deal, but it is thought that he will because Ten Hag's priorities in the summer transfer window are a world-class No 9 and bolstering midfield. Additionally, Ten Hag must determine if the Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst loans should be converted into long-term agreements. It is believed that the latter may not be kept, but that a deal for Sabitzer with Bayern Munich may be attempted.

Whether the Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, or any additional funding from investment firms interested in partnering with Ten Hag will assume control of the company will determine how much Ten Hag will spend.

The fact that United may consider offers for a winger who initially cost Borussia Dortmund £73 million (€82.5 million) in July 2021 is a clue that Sancho has fallen short of expectations. Maguire, who cost £80 million (€90.4 million) to acquire in 2019, is still the most expensive defender in history. He came from Leicester. Ajax received an initial payment of £34.7 million (€39.2 million) for Van de Beek, who has struggled to maintain a position. The Guardian.
