Opinion: Harry Maguire doesn't understand that Manchester United are not a mid table team

Harry Maguire is seriously taking so much pride in himself; no disrespect meant, but the 30-year-old is not who he claims to be. Follow this article and you will understand.

In 2019, Harry Maguire was named captain of Manchester United even though he had yet to play a single minute for the team. Harry Maguire praises the 4-0 victory over Chelsea as his best performance while wearing a Manchester United jersey, but the defender still has a lot to show.

Harry Maguire, even though he is currently only United's backup option, doesn't think he has anything to show.

And these remarks are concerning because you always have something to show at Manchester United and at the elite level in general. Harry Maguire said in an interview with The Times published before England's win over Ukraine on Sunday that he is not deserving of criticism this year.

"I’m 30 years old, but I shouldn’t really need to prove myself at this level." I've got over 50 caps. "I'm England’s top-scoring defender," he said.

"I’ve played nearly 200 times for Manchester United; I’ve captained the club for three years now, but I do also understand that when you’re the captain of Manchester United, you do come under the most amount of scrutiny."

"Last season at club level, my performance wasn’t good enough. Alongside everybody else at club level, not just myself, I struggled. Everyone else struggled."

"Obviously this season, I haven’t played as much as I’d like for my club, but I feel my form’s been good this year."

You could say that criticism of Harry Maguire's displays has occasionally been excessive, but Maguire should recognize that he has a point to make each time he enters the field of play. This mindset is what distinguishes outstanding players.

Ask Manchester United's all-time leading scorer, Wayne Rooney, who explained this in 2016 at the conclusion of his tenure at Old Trafford.

"You always feel you have to prove yourself every season, because it’s a dream to play for them, but there is pressure to be successful," Wayne Rooney told The New York Times back in 2016.

"You always feel pressure when you play for Manchester United." "It's one of the biggest, if not the biggest, clubs in the world, and it’s been a pleasure and a privilege to play for them for so long."

Wayne Rooney's remarks serve as an example of how Sir Alex Ferguson developed a star. The great leader frequently carried out what he had repeatedly threatened to do—warn his players that if they let their bars slip, they would be replaced.

Harry Maguire cannot take pride in his accomplishments and expect to be treated with reverence because he plays for Manchester United. He must merit it.

This distinguishes real champions from also-rans. Casemiro listed the wish to prove himself once more as one of his main reasons for joining Manchester United.

The Brazilian told Real Madrid’s website in an exit interview: "I’ve made history at this club; it’s not going to change." I have to prove myself at Manchester United. I’ve won nothing there, and I want to help the team. I want to like I’ve helped at Madrid.  "I'm looking forward to this new challenge."

At Manchester United, Casemiro has already earned one trophy, and he wants to add more. It's unclear right now whether Harry Maguire will stay around at Old Trafford past this season, but the 30-year-old needs to understand that as a Man United player, he deserves all the criticism.

Harry Maguire was signed for a record transfer fee of £80 million, but the reality is he has no pedigree coming into Carrington, and he needs to work the hardest to prove he is worth being a captain at Old Trafford. He shouldn't allow the fact that he always gets a regular starting berth under Gareth Southgate with the England national team to keep him in the illusion that he has been a good player.

Conclusion: Harry Maguire, with no disrespect intended, is a mid-table team player. Casemiro made the criticisms he received after switching from Santiago Bernabeu to Old Trafford to spur him on, and critics are eating back their words.

Even Rio Ferdinand was forced to admit that he is the new Roy Keane of Manchester United.

Wayne Rooney went on to prove Sir Alex Ferguson was right to bank on him as a teenager and went on to become the club's record goalscorer. He was so consistent that there is serious doubt if Wazza experienced a poor season at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo came back to Manchester United already over 30 but still set the standard he used to attain while he was 22. It's unfortunate his second stint ended with so much drama and controversies.

Harry Maguire needs to understand he is at a club where so many legacies have been built and huge boots remain to be filled. It's either you step up to these challenges or you seek the easy way out.
