'He understands football'- Marcel Sabitzer earns Erik Ten Hag and teammates plaudits after amazing debut

Marcel Sabitzer made his debut for Manchester United in front of Old Trafford crowd on Saturday. The 28 year old was recruited after Christian Eriksen's injury forced Erik Ten Hag and Manchester United to change their winter transfer policy.

Marcel Sabitzer made his Manchester United debut against Crystal Palace as a substitute, and his gritty midfield appearance earned plaudits from his coach, teammates, and supporters alike.

The new number 15 joined the Reds on loan from Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, and four days later, he was thrust into a difficult match against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford with the score set at 2-1 to the Reds.

The international player from Austria came off the bench with nine minutes remaining and was entrusted with assisting to reinforce our midfield as Palace placed a lot of pressure in an effort to score an equalizer.

Even though Marcel Sabitzer's time on the field was brief, it was enough for observers to recognize the quality he is bringing to the Reds' midfield. Marcel Sabitzer displayed composure on the ball and energy off it.

When he spoke to MUTV following the game, the Austrian's new manager Erik ten Hag also remarked on the influence of the player.

"He understands football,” said Ten Hag. “You see it straight from the start. You have seen that in the training as well, but yeah, he did quite well."

“He's really composed on the ball and he knows how to defend so you need a player like that who understands the game and will bring the right spirit.”

Left back, Luke Shaw also made positive remarks regarding the Austrian's first outing for Manchester United as well as stating how he has amazed his new teammates in training.

"He was amazing and he’s not been here long,” Shaw told MUTV.

“He’s only been here a couple of days now and he showed his quality in training. I think to come on with 10 men and show that impressive performance in not so long [on the pitch] is good and shows signs to come of what he’s about.”


The Bayern Munich loanee also acknowledged his debut with an Instagram post under which Man United's player's congratulated him.

He wrote on Instagram: “My debut for United at Old Trafford. Wow! Thanks for your great support!”

The player will be aiming to get more game times following Casemiro's anticipated absence due to red card and Christian Eriksen's injury.
